The origins of Marijuana

Where did the word “Marijuana” originate from?

The words itself has a very controversial role in marijuana culture today. As mainstream society learns to love the special herb with many positive effects – it’s about time! – and begins to adopt marijuana as part of everyday life, the terminology is taking center stage.

So, let’s get to it. Back in the early 1900s the word “Marijuana” did not exist. It actually only started to pop up in the 1930s when the American government had to find a scapegoat for the Great Depression. They chose to blame African Americans, Mexican immigrants AND what the beautiful plant that we have come to love today, Marijuana. All 29-states back then chose to ban the herb. I think we have Harry Anslinger to blame for the negative stigma surrounding Marijuana.
